Passport and Visa

Visas are granted by the Brazilian consulates abroad. Visa is not required for citizens from Mercosur countries, just a valid passport or identity.

Requirements:

  1. Each traveler must complete their own Visa Application Form, including children under 18.
  2. Payment of a fee, which varies according to the type of visa and length of stay.
  3. Passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of the visa application.
  4. Recent 3x4cm or 5x7cm photo on white background.
  5. Children under 18 unaccompanied by parents or guardians must bear an authorization form signed by both parents.

Currency and Exchange

The currency of Brazil is the Real (R$).

Foreign currencies and travelers checks can be exchanged for reals at banks, travel agencies and authorized hotels.

Dollars, Euros and travelers checks can be exchanged at banks, travel agencies and authorized hotels. The exchange rate is published daily in newspapers and on specialized websites.


Brazilian Currency: It is an application designed to offer information about the security features on Brazilian banknotes. The purpose is to help foreign tourists as well as Brazilians to verify a real bill. By placing a smartphone or a tablet over the note, the application identifies it by comparing images and then it shows the main security items that should be checked.

Cambio Legal (Legal Exchange): An application that provides the location of currency exchange agencies closest to entities authorized by the Central Bank of Brazil to buy and sell currency.

Vaccination

Since large parts of Brazil are in tropical zone, before coming it is recommended to get vaccinated against yellow fever at least 10 days before traveling to certain places. However, almost all the eastern brazilian coast is free of this illness.

Brazil requires an international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever for tourists from some countries: Angola, Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Colombia, Ecuador, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guyana, Liberia, Nigeria, Peru, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Venezuela and Zaire.

Driver's License

Tourists with a foreign driver’s license are authorized to drive in Brazil when their stay is less than 180 days.

Drivers must bear a valid foreign driver’s license and identification document.

For longer stays, drivers must get a Brazilian driving permit corresponding to their foreign one.
